Getting Serious about Why We Are Here
While churches continue to stand on prominent street corners, they are, by
and large, invisible to the vast majority of people that drive by them each day.
The lights may be on every night of the week, but all that activity is largely
irrelevant to those on the outside. Somewhere along the way, there’s been a
disconnect. The church of Jesus Christ has become marginalized. It’s tempting
to point the finger at Hollywood or Washington or some other place, but
throughout the centuries, Christians have almost always found themselves living
in a hostile culture. The problem is not, by and large, "out there."
That great theologian, Pogo, had it right: "We have found the enemy, and
he is us." Rather than take seriously Christ’s mandate to go and make
disciples, evangelical Christianity has turned to catering to the consumeristic
whims of the "already convinced."
Here at Family in Christ Community Church we are trying to do church
differently. We are serious about the fact that God has not put us here for
religious self-indulgence; he has put us here to be self-sacrificial. He is
calling us to reach out to the people all around us so that the lost can be
found, the blind given sight, and the spiritually asleep awakened. Ministry is
mission and mission is a declaration of war. We are committed to doing our part
as God reclaims his creation. We aren’t going to save the world, but with
God’s empowering Spirit, we can make a difference to hundreds of families that
God has placed all around us. We invite you to join us.
